What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of healing and holistic medicine, often known as the 'knowledge of life'. The first written texts originate around 5,000 years ago, in the form of Sanskrit verse or sloka in what are now known as the classical texts of Ayurveda.

The wisdom of Ayurveda is a vehicle towards achieving an optimum state of health and well being and is thus one of the most enduring and powerful systems of healing, that is available to everyone.

The tridosha theory is unique to Ayurveda.  Vata, pitta and kapha constitute the chemical nature of every living organism: they are created by the five elements of ether, air, fire, water and earth. We are all a combination of the three constitutions, with one or two being predominant.

The specific make up of our constitution (Prakriti) is as unique to us as our DNA code. When the three doshas are in their natural proportions, there is balance, health and wellness. However, factors such as diet, lifestyle, hobbies, relationships, work and the seasons, can all affect this elemental ratio and lead to an imbalanced state.

It is the imbalance in our natural constitution that causes dis-order in the body and/or mind which creates dis-ease. Ayurveda seeks to heal by restoring one back to their natural state of balance.

Ayurvedic Health Consultations

During the consultation, you will have plenty of time to discuss any health goals, symptoms and concerns. Ayurveda emphasises health and balance in all areas of life so be prepared to talk a little about your yourself e.g. your diet, medical history, career, relationships, hobbies, exercise routines, mental health and sleep patterns.

Sarah will determine any dosha imbalances and seek to identify the potential root cause of any disorders. Your recommendations to help restore a healthy balance will be discussed during the consultation with the following emailed to you shortly after:

  1. An Ayurvedic perspective on any disorders, including potential causes and ways in which to reduce/manage symptoms.

  2. Dietary advice with a list of food and food combinations to avoid.

  3. A list of healing/balancing foods that are recommended.

  4. Herbal remedies with full instructions for preparing them at home (where appropriate).

If required, Sarah can also recommend Ayurvedic supplements to further promote your healing process. These may include digestive powders, detoxifying tablets, rejuvenating jams, immunity boosting teas and therapeutic oils.

All our Ayurvedic supplements and oils are of the highest quality and potency and are ethically sourced in Sri Lanka. Supplements are posted out within 24 hours of your consultation and last approximately 4 weeks.

You will hopefully start to feel much better in just a few days or weeks after your first consultation, once you have put the diet and lifestyle recommendations into practice and the herbal remedies become part of your daily routine.

Some disorders take a little longer to treat and your health plan may have several twists and turns along the way, before you reach your health goals. Sometimes our bodies aren't ready for a full set of changes all at once, it can be too much of a shock to the system, so your treatment plan may start off with a few simple changes and gentle remedies, then gradually progress to stronger herbs that complete the healing process.

A follow-up consultation is recommended after 4 weeks to check on your progress, make changes to your treatment plan as required and provide any new supplements.

Once a healthy balance is found and the digestion is working in optimum condition, foods removed from the diet may gradually be re-introduced, but now you have learnt to recognise the early warning signs of imbalance.

If the body-mind shifts out of balance again, you will be fully equipped with a powerful knowledge of healing remedies and an intimate understanding of simple changes that can quickly make a big difference to you!
